Description Life zones and habitat: Montane to alpine; moist meadows, along streams, sunny areas.
Plant: Conspicuous, coarse-looking, tall perennial, 20-40 inches high.
Leaves: Very large basal and stem leaves, alternate, oblong or oblong-lanceolate leaves, 12 to 20 inches long and 4 to 6 inches wide; deeply veined.
Inflorescence: Long vertical spike-like panicles with many clusters of 10 to 25 flowers arranged in whorls, greenish-white/red turning rose-red later and maturing into reddish-brown seed heads.
