Description Life zones and habitat: Subalpine and alpine. Rocky areas, crevices.
Plant: Perennnial, compact mat about 2 inches tall; flower stems 5 to 6 inches tall.
Leaves: Crowded rosettes of narrow linear to lanceolate-shaped, up to about 1/2-inch long, hairy edges and spine at tip.
Inflorescence: Clusters of 2 to 10 white flowers atop reddish stems, each less than 1/2-inch across with 5 petals and 5 green/purplish sepals; each petal with several yellow to reddish dots; center ovary surrounded by white stamens. Petals of ssp. austromontana are not clawed (not narrowed at their bases).
