Description Life zones and habitat: Montane and subalpine; open woods, aspen groves, meadows.
Plant: Erect, tall perennial up to 4 feet tall.
Leaves: Elliptic or ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate stem leaves up to 12 inches long, with 3 to 5 veins; sparsely hairy or smooth surface.
Inflorescence: Single, large, composite nodding flower heads up to 4 inches across with many yellow rays and yellow-green disk florets; green pointed phyllaries with bristly edges beneath the blossom.
