Description Life zones and habitat: Subalpine; forests.
Plant: Erect perennial 12 to 18 inches tall, rough stems, often purplish tinge.
Leaves: Oblanceolate to elliptic basal and stem leaves, 3 to 5 inches long.
Inflorescence: Multiple terminal clusters of 3 to 6 composite flower heads; green, leaf-like bracts enclosing the involucres below the blossoms; yellow rays and disk florets.
