Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills and montane (5200 to 10500 ft.); various soils in woodlands, along streams and in gulches.
Plant: Shrub or small tree growing in dense clumps of many small trunks, usually up 16 ft. tall, but can be 20 to 30 ft tall, and spreading 10 to 15 ft.
Leaves: Shiny, green, deciduous leaves having 3 to 5 deeply-cut lobes, or three distinct leaflets; overall 7/8 to 3-1/8 inches wide; on petioles 1 to 3-3/4 inches long; edges with sharp teeth; leaves turn yellow to reddish-orange in fall.
Inflorescence: Clusters of a few green, inconspicuous flowers with protruding white stamens.
Bloom Period: April to June.
Fruit: Smooth winged seeds ("samaras") 7/8 to 1-1/8 inch long.
