Description Life zones and habitat: Subalpine and alpine (10000 to 14000 ft.); moists areas in meadows and forests.
Plant: Compact, clump-forming perennial with multiple erect stem, 3 to 16 inches tall.
Leaves: Palmate basal leaves on petioles 1-1/2 to 8 inches long, with 3 to 5 leaflets further divided into pointed lobes; stem leaves (involucre leaves) similar, but smaller and sessile.
Inflorescence: Solitary or 2 to 8 flowers in umbels, each 1 to 1-1/2 inches across; no petals but 5 to 9 white to yellowish ovate to obovate sepals; 40 to 80 yellow stamens.
Bloom Period: June to August.
