Description | Life zones and habitat: Subalpine to alpine (10000 to 13000 ft.); moist, rocky soils in alpine meadows and tundra slopes. Plant: Erect perennial 8 to 24 inches tall with 1 to 3 slightly hairy green or reddish stems. Leaves: Mostly basal leaves in rosettes, bright green and once to three times pinnately-lobed and 2 to 3-1/8 inches long; mid-stem leaves are sessile and pinnately-lobed into linear segments; leaves on flowering stems becoming linear and entire. Inflorescence: Narrow, spike-like panicle with 6 to 30 small composite flowers, each with 6 to 20 yellow disk florets; round-ish involucre with ovate-lanceolate to elliptic-shaped phyllaries having dark brown to black margins that are somewhat to very hairy.
