Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains to montane (3400 to 8600 ft.); sandy or rocky soils; open areas in woodlands, grasslands, and disturbed areas. Plant: Perennial with numerous erect or ascending stems 6 to 40 inches tall. Leaves: Whorled with 3 or 4 leaves per node; blades are linear, 3/4 to 4-3/4 inches long 3/8 to 1-5/8 inches wide; on very short petioles. Inflorescence: Small umbels at the upper nodes, 3/4 to 2-1/2 inches across on peduncles 3/8 to 2 inches long; small flowers with petals that are white to cream (or even greenish-purple), the erect hoods are white to yellowish, less than 1/10-inch long; horns are longer than hoods.
