Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills to alpine (6000 to 12500 ft.); moderately dry soils in meadows, woodland openings, roadsides.
Plant: Perennial, leafy clustered stems 6 to 32 inches tall; foliage with spreading hairs.
Leaves: Basal leaves withered by blooming; stem leaves oblanceolate to oblong or ovate, 1-5/8 to 5-1/8 inches long and up to 3/4-inch wide; upper leaves are clasping; hairy faces and ciliate margins.
Inflorescence: Corymbiform arrays of 1 to 6 composite flower heads up to 1-3/4 inch across each with many (100 to 150) blue to lavender rays becoming slighty curved at the tips; many yellow disk florets; involucre with unequal, glandular-hairy phyllaries in 2 to 3 layers.
Bloom Period: June to September.

Note: Very similar to E. speciosus except that E. subtrinervis is overall much hairier.
