Description Life zones and habitat: Montane to alpine (8800 to 12500 ft); rocky slopes and ridges, sagebrush meadows, conifer woodlands.
Plant: Mat-forming perennial with prostrate stems less than 2-1/2 inches tall; erect flowering stems less than 2 inches tall with woolly hairs to nearly smooth and with or without one or more leaflike bracts in the middle.
Leaves: Rosettes of basal leaves, blade usually elliptic to spatulate less than 1/2 inch long, with smooth upper and lower surfaces.
Inflorescence: Umbels with branches shorter than 0.2 inches; bright yellow flowers aging reddish, with tepals less than 1/4-inch long; a few green elliptic bracts at the base of the umbel.
Bloom Period: July to September.
