Description |
Life zones and habitat: Subalpine and alpine (10000 to 14000 ft.); rocky soils in open alpine meadows and hillsides. Plant: Erect perennial, one to several stems, 4 to 12 inches tall; hairy stems and leaves. Leaves: Basal leaves with simple or with 3 to 15 linear lobes, 7/8 to 2-3/4 inches long, hairy; stem leaves the same, but smaller and fewer lobes. Inflorescence: One to several heads per plant, borne singly on each stem; large composite heads, 2 to 3 inches in diameter; 15 to 25 yellow ray florets with 3 notches at the tips; domed center about 1 inch across with many (150 to 400), yellow-brown disk florets; involucres below are hemispherically-shaped with phyllaries that are in 2 or 3 layers, thin, linear-lanceolate and hairy.
