Description | Life zones and habitat: Foothills to subalpine (5400 to 10,700 ft.); rocky soils on slopes, cliffs, ledges, stream banks, forested canyon bottoms. Plant: Shrub, 1 to 5 ft. tall; bark readily exfoliates in reddish-brown or blackish pieces. Leaves: Deciduous, opposite leaves, blades elliptic to ovate, 1/4- to 2 inches long; edges are usually crenate to dentate; conspicuous, sunken veins. Inflorescence: Clusters of a few to several white flowers; 5 petals 0.2 to 0.4-inch long, 8 or 10 stamens and yellowish anthers; very short triangular-ovate sepals below. Bloom Period: May to July.
