Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains and foothills (3500 to 8500 ft.); various soil types on roadsides, in fields and disturbed areas. Plant: Prostrate or low-growing annual, stems up to to 24 inches long; considered a weed. Leaves: Alternate, orbicular or reniform and often with 5 to 7 shallow lobes; 1/4 to 1-1/8 inches long; margins are dentate to crenate; on petioles that gradually become shorter upward. Inflorescence: Small flowers 3/4 to 1-1/8 inch across, in clusters of 2 to 6 in upper leaf axils, each flower on a stalk up to 1-1/8-inch long; 5 whitish or slightly tinted pink or purple petals, somewhat spreading and with darker parallel veins; numerous stamens in the center are fused into a tube with anthers protruding at top; pistil is enclosed by the stamen tube with a dozen or so styles protruding out the top of the tube; 5 sepals below that are less than half the length of the petals, with 3 shorter, linear to oblong bractlets immediately below.
