Description Life zones and habitat: Plains to montane (4500 to 9000 ft.); sandy and gravelly soils, shale outcrops, plains and open areas in pinyon-juniper woodlands.
Plant: Clump-forming perennial; clumps 24 to 40 inches across; branching stems 16 to 28 inches long; herbage smooth or densely pubescent.
Leaves: Thick, opposite, ovate to round blades 2 to 4 inches long, on petioles 3/4 to 1-5/8-inches long; bases rounded to cordate, often asymmetric; tips acute or acuminate to obtuse and rarely rounded.
Inflorescence: Large, showy, clusters of 6 pink-magenta flowers at branch tips; each cluster surrounded by a cup-shaped, 5-lobed involucre, with lobes that are 1-1/4 to 1-5/8 inches tall and have acute tips; funnel-shaped perianth (flower) is 3/4 to 2-3/8 inches long; 5 pink-magenta protruding stamens with yellow anthers, stigma protruding beyond anthers.
Bloom Period: June to September.
