Description Life zones and habitat: Plains to montane (4000 to 9800 ft.); various soil types, generally in moist areas; roadsides, disturbed ground; considered a weed.
Plant: Clumping perennial with a rosette of basal leaves; stems (peduncles) 6 to 20 inches tall supporting inflorescence.
Leaves: Numerous basal leaves, narrowly lanceolate, 4 to 16 inches long, on petioles; acute tips; with 3 to several distinct veins.
Inflorescence: Very dense ovoid to conical or cylindrical spikes 5/8 to 3 inches long atop hairy peduncles; blooming from the bottom up, very small flowers with inconspicuous white corollas about 1/10-inch long or less, protruding stamens with white or yellowish anthers; each flower subtended by a single, ovate, acuminate bract about 3/16-inch long; above the flowering portion the sepals are green, obovate, less than 1/10-inch long and hairy; below the flowering portion the bracts of the spent flowers are brownish.
Bloom Period: May to August.
