Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains to subalpine (4900 to 10500 ft.); meadows, floodplains and disturbed areas along roadsides. Plant: Annual or short-lived perennial with branched, erect or decumbent stems at base, 12 to 40 inches tall; stems and foliage with fine hairs; some plants with only male or only female flowers (dioecious). Leaves: Basal leaves oblong-lanceolate to elliptic, petiolate, and usually withering by flowering time; stem leaves lanceolate to elliptic, sessile; blades are 1.2 to 4.7 inches long and 0.2 to 1.2 inches wide with pointed tips. Inflorescence: Several to many flowers in open cymes with one central and two lateral blossoms; fragrant flowers 1 to 1.3 inches across with 5 white deeply 2 lobed petals; light green or often deep maroon (especially on males) flowers), densely hairy, inflated, larger and more urn shaped on female flowers calyx is strongly veined and ridged, 10-veined on males and 20 on females.
