Description | Life zones and habitat: Plains to montane (3500 to 9000 ft.); dry gravelly or rocky soils in open areas on hillsides, prairies, roadsides. Plant: Upright perennial with multiple hairy stems, up to 20 inches tall, normally much shorter. Leaves: Alternate, wide petiolate leaves up to 2 inches long, deeply dissected into 3 to 5 lobes that have curled edges and may be lobed in turn. Inflorescence: Coral-pink to orange-red flowers, solitary or in clusters, 1-5/8 inch across, 5 petals, many yellow anthers. Bloom Period: May to September.
