Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills to subalpine (6700 to 11500 ft.); moist, shady mountain forests and streamsides.
Plant: Bush-like perennial, stems mostly 16 to 40 inches tall, freely branched.
Leaves: Stem leaves 2 to 4 inches long, alternate, clasping, ovate to oblong-lanceolate with sharply-pointed tips.
Inflorescence: One or two small, bell-shaped white or greenish-white flowers hanging below leaves on a twisted, slender pedicel stalk; each flower with 6 spreading tepals about 1/2-inch long and curved back at tips.
Fruit: Red or dark-yellowish oval-oblong berries hanging beneath leaves, each about 3/8-inch long.
