Description Life zones and habitat: Plains to subalpine (5000 to 10,500); open areas along streams, in meadows and open woodlands.
Plant: Perennials 16 to 48 inches tall with 1 to 5 erect stems that are sometimes reddish near the ground; mostly hairless.
Leaves: Lower stem leaves usually gone by flowering time; mid-upper leaves are alternate, linear-oblanceolate to lanceolate or elliptic, 0.3 to 5.5 inches long, clasping and with smooth surfaces and edges.
Inflorescence: Composite flower heads in open branching clusters at the top of the plant and arising from upper leaf axils; each flower about 1-inch across with 13 to 23 rays, usually pale to dark blue or purple; 19 to 33 yellow disk florets turning purplish red with age; narrow phyllaries are in 4 to 6 layers and very unequal in length, green with black tips; peduncles are up to 2.5 inches long, hairless or minutely hairy.
Bloom period: July to September.
