Description | Life zones and habitat: Plains and Foothills (4500 to 6500 ft. ); limestone or gypsum soils in pastures, plains, open areas. Plant: Low-growing perennial with several to many erect stems branching from base in tufts, 3 to 6 inches tall, rarely taller. Leaves: Opposite leaves 0.4 to 2 inches long, deeply pinnately-lobed 2 to 8 times and lobes may be cut again with tips rolled inward (revolute). Inflorescence: Flowers crowded at stem tips, 1/2 to 1 inch long with 5 white petals with purple streaks, united at base and forming lobes; lower lip with 3 lobes, center lobe very long and broad with hairs on upper surface; upper two lobes much smaller; long, protruding stamens and stigma. Bloom Period: May to July.
