Description Life zones and habitat: Plains and foothills (3500 to 7000 ft.); dry, sometimes calcareous soils on plains, desert areas, slopes, flats and prairies.
Plant: Low-growing upright rounded or flat-topped perennial, up to 9 inches tall; stems branched with rough, short hairs.
Leaves: Linear, opposite, sessile blades crowded along the stems; 3/8 to 1-1/8 inches long and less than 1/8-inch wide; surfaces covered with short stiff hairs.
Inflorescence: Showy yellow composite flower heads on the branch tips, 3 to 6 ovate to orbiculate rays and 18 to 24 red-orange disk florets; bell-shaped to cylindrical involucre with oblong, thin and papery phyllaries in 3 to 4 graduated series, straw colored to yellow, often with red-tinted tips.
Bloom Period: June to October.
