Description Life zones and habitat: Foothills to subalpine (4700 to 11000 ft). Woodlands, shrublands; widely distributed in the western US.
Plant: Deciduous shrub or small tree, 3 to 16 feet tall; bark smooth, reddish brown turning gray with age.
Leaves: Alternate, elliptical, 3/4 to 2-3/8 inches and up to 1-3/4 inches wide, green above, paler beneath, often with prominent veins; toothed edges above the middle.
Inflorescence: Prolific, showy flowers in racemes of 5 to 15 blossoms, each with 5 white petals, 4 or 5 styles and 20 stamens.
Bloom Period: May to July.
Fruit: Sweet, dark purple berry; round, ~3/8 inch across.
