Description |
Life zones and habitat: Foothills (5000 to 7500 ft.); moist areas in meadows, along streams, ditches, swamps. Plant: Erect perennial 2 to 7 feet tall; rigid green to purple stems with dark spots, covered with fine soft hairs; branched at the the inflorescence. Leaves: Groups of 4 or 5 leaves in whorls; lanceolate, 2-3/8 to 6 inches long with toothed margins, conspicuous veins on upper surfaces, gland-spotted lower leaf surfaces. Inflorescence: Flat-topped corymbs 3 to 6 inches across of multiple groups of 9 to 20 small rayless composite blossoms; involucres and disc florets purplish, white protruding stamens.
