Description Life zones and habitat: Semi-desert to mesas (4500 to 7000 ft); dry, sandy or rocky soils, open sites, shrublands and woodlands.
Plant: Annual 3 to 8 inches tall with reddish, spreading, branching stems with tufts of cobwebby hairs in lower portion and glandular hairs higher.
Leaves: Lower blades in a basal rosette; lower stem leaves alternate; basal and lower stem leaves once or twice pinnately-lobed, 0.4 to 1.2 inches long with linear to oblong lobes less than 0.2 inches long; upper stem leaves are entire or have basal lobes; gray-green surfaces with cobwebby hairs.
Inflorescence: Small flowers in open, spreading inflorescence of one or two flowers on unequal pedicels; funnel-shaped blossoms have 5-lobed corollas about 1/4-inch long or less, white or light to deep violet with yellow or pale blue to white throat with yellow spots at the base; anthers and stigma protruding slightly; calyx about 1/8-inch long, smooth or with glandular hairs and lobes with short points.
Bloom Period: April and May.
