| Description |
Life zones and habitat: Plains to montane (5000 to 9500 ft.); rocky slopes, cliffsides and canyons among oaks and conifers. Plant: Shrub 3 to 6 ft tall; gray and shredding bark, young twigs twigs are light brown or red-brown, slightly hairy. Leaves: Opposite, blades ovate-elliptic to elliptic, 3/8 to 1-5/8 inches long 3/16 to 5/8-inch wide; on short petioles; margins are entire to revolute; upper surface smooth to slightly hairy, lower covered with silky hairs. Inflorescence: Solitary white, showy, fragrant blossoms at branch tips; 4 obovate-to oblong petals 2/10 to 6/10-inch long with irregular margins; 26 to 64 stamens with yellow-ish anthers; 4 styles; 4 yellow-green smooth to slightly hairy sepals.
